Phonics

Phonics is needed for the first two years of learning to read, in order for children to develop strong reading skills.

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or the beginning or Year 2, or is in the first 2 years of learning English (EAL), their lessons will be heavily phonics-focused.

At George Mitchell, we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme.

During school closure, your child will be assigned phonics books and activities through Bug Club.

We recommend that all children at this stage of learning:

1.Watch a sounds revision or learning video daily. The Letters and Sounds videos are excellent and match the lessons taught in school. Watch them in order, starting with Reception Introduction and Reception Lesson 1, and encourage your child to join in.

2. Complete vocabulary work or games linked to the book or sounds being learned

3. Listen to the Phonics Bug book using the “Read to Me” function

4. Read and enjoy the Phonics Bug or other books linked to the sound being learned. These books will often need to be read several times each.

5. Have some fun around the book. Make, create, explore something related to the book’s theme.

Your child’s teacher will set work that will help your child. Please ask if you would like further guidance.
